Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Lewis Carroll
Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1st trade edition [1922]

This edition of Alice in Wonderland is illustrated throughout by Gwynedd M. Hudson (poster artist & illustrator, fl. 1910-1935)† with orange/black figures and decoration within the text plus twelve colour plates with titled and b/w illustrated tissue guards.

Note: this edition also published in a white cloth binding as a two hundred and fifty copy limited edition numbered and signed by the artist.

Lewis Carroll’s name is spelt incorrectly on the title page; this error was repeated for the later blue cloth Boots/Hodder edition of 1928 but was corrected for the red cloth Boots/Hodder 1932 Centenary edition.

For reference – title page verso: Printed in Great Britain for Hoddder & Stoughton Ltd., by Henry Stone & Son, Ltd., Banbury.

Hardback. Publisher’s red cloth with gilt titles and gilt/black illustrations to spine and front board; illustrated endpapers. pp [10], 181, including two-tone illustrations plus colour plates. Size: 10.25 x 8 inches approx. (260mm x 205mm).

Covers rubbed and worn; boards bumped and worn to corners; spine a little sunned; some fraying to cloth at spine ends; a couple of small punctures to cloth below ‘G’ of Gwynedd on spine; cloth marked and grubby in places, with some splash marks and loss of colour especially to front board. Foxing and offsetting to front and rear free endpapers; foxing to preliminary and last few pages; scattered foxing, age-toning and occasional grubby mark and dustiness but generally pages clean; colour plates very clean and bright; edges of page-block tanned and spotted.

Overall, showing some wear especially to covers but overall remaining a reasonably nice copy – lovely and quite uncommon.
