Lavengro – The Scholar, The Gypsy, The Priest

by George Borrow, illustrated by Edmund J. Sullivan
London: Peter Davies Limited, 1926

Autobiographical novel and one of Borrow’s most well known works, originally published 1851 by John Murray.

An Edmund Joseph Sullivan (1869-1933) illustrated edition of Lavengro was first published in 1896 by Macmillan with numerous b/w line drawings throughout the text; Macmillan reprinted this edition in 1914. However, also in 1914, T. N. Foulis of Edinburgh published this title but instead is newly illustrated with twelve colour plates by Sullivan.

This copy a 1926 edition from publishers Peter Davies who took over the title from Foulis*.

Hardback. Publisher’s green cloth with gilt title to spine, in a dustwrapper. pp xxii, 655, plus 12 colour plates. Size: 8.5 x 5.5 inches approx. (213mm x 138mm).

Dustwrapper worn and creased; wear to spine ends and corner tips; a touch dusty/grubby and a little foxed in places. Cloth clean, a touch dulled to spine. Foxing/offsetting to endpapers; edges of page-block foxed/spotted with some encroachment onto page margins, otherwise pages generally clean throughout.

Nonetheless, remaining a nice, clean copy – and uncommon to find with its attractive dustwrapper.
