The Complete Angler, or The Contemplative Man’s Recreation
by Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton, edited by Edward Jesse
London: George Bell and Sons, 1889
Numerous wood engravings in the text plus twenty-six steel engravings.
Hardback. Full leather binding in red; raised bands to spine; decorative blind rules to boards; gilt decoration to margins of inner boards; gilt title to spine; page-block with all edges gilt; head and tail bands; remains of a sewn-in ribbon pagemark. pp [i]-xix, [3], [1]-496 (with extra leaf 23*/24*), incl. b/w illustrations plus b/w frontispiece and twenty-five b/w plates. Size: 7.25 x 4.75 inches approx. (183mm x 120mm).
Leather with some light wear and rubbing to extremities; light wear to spine joints but otherwise holding up well. A previous owner’s inscription in ink to front free endpaper; a stub remaining of a blank page (before half-title) where it appears an earlier inscription has been; scattered foxing throughout, heavy in places, but generally pages clean although a little dusty and grubby in places.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a reasonably nice copy – attractive.
