The Old Man and the Sea
by Ernest Hemingway, illustrated by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard
London: The Reprint Society, 1st illustrated edition 1953
This title first published in the US by Scribners in 1952, the UK edition being published the same year by Jonathan Cape. This illustrated edition published by The Reprint Society in 1953 unusually pre-dated Cape’s illustrated version of the same by two years (1955).
Hardback. Publisher’s turquoise blue cloth with title to spine and decoration to front board in silver; illustrated endpapers; top edge of page-block tinted red; in a dustwrapper. pp 117, [118-120], including b/w illustrations. Size: 8.75 x 6.25 inches approx. (221mm x 157mm).
Dustwrapper a little rubbed and worn to folds and extremities; lightly chipped and worn to spine ends; a couple of short edge tears to bottom edge of rear panel; a touch sunned and darkened to spine; overall a little dusty and marked. Cloth clean and bright, sharp corners to boards. Light spotting and offsetting to endpapers; occasional dustiness or mark but generally pages clean throughout; lightly spotted/foxed to edges of page-block.
Overall, light wear but otherwise a particularly nice, clean and fresh copy – lovely indeed.
