Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson (Ernest Benn, 1927) | illustrated by Edmund Dulac

Treasure Island

by Robert Louis Stevenson, with illustrations by Edmund Dulac
London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1st edition 1927

The classic adventure story of pirates, the high seas and black spots by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) was originally serialised in the magazine ‘Young Folks’ (1881-2), then published in book form by Cassell (1883).

This illustrated edition by Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was originally published in 1927 in limited and trade editions; this copy being the first trade edition.

Note: a later issue in red-orange cloth was published circa 1929 which states ‘1st printed 1927’ to title page verso*. The standard Dulac bibliography by Hughey states the first trade edition has the date MCMXXVII to foot of title page.

Hardback. Publisher’s tan cloth with green label and gilt title to spine; gilt decoration to margins of front board. Lacking the dustwrapper. pp [i]-xii, [xiii-xiv], 15-255, [256], including b/w illustrations, plus twelve colour plates. Size: 9.75 x 7.25 inches approx. (247mm x 194mm).

Cloth a little worn and rubbed to extremities; some wear to foot of spine; a touch grubby and marked in places, splashed to spine. Offsetting and foxing to endpapers; scattered foxing/spotting and some staining here and there, a few pages with some heavier staining, but generally pages reasonably clean throughout; edges of page-bloth tanned and foxed/spotted.

Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a reasonably nice copy of the first trade edition.
