Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Lewis Carroll
Hodder and Stoughton Ltd, 1982

The Gwynedd M. Hudson (poster artist & illustrator, fl. 1910-1935)† illustrated edition of Alice in Wonderland was originally published 1922 by Hodder and Stoughton.

This copy, a leather bound limited edition (no limitation stated) was published in 1982 and is a near facsimile reprint of the 1922 edition (Carroll’s name correctly spelled to title page, marbled-effect endpapers rather than illustrated). Illustrated throughout with orange/black figures and decoration within the text, plus twelve tissue-guarded tipped-in colour plates.

Note: also in 1982 Hodder published a trade edition with red papered faux-cloth boards; and also a more sumptuous limited edition finely bound in red morocco of 500 copies with slipcase. Neither of these editions had the tipped-in colour plates – they’re just printed to page on art paper.

Hardback. Publisher’s dark blue leather binding with gilt titles and illustrations to spine and upper board; marbled-effect endpapers; sewn-in ribbon page marker. pp [10], 1-180 [181], [1], including two-tone illustrations plus tipped-in colour plates. Size: 9.75 x 7.25 inches approx. (247mm x 182mm).

Light shelf wear to board corner tips. Light spotting/foxing to edges of page-block but otherwise pages clean throughout.

Overall, a nice, clean copy – very presentable indeed.
