Black’s Guide to the Isle of Wight
edited by J. E. Morris
A. & C. Black Ltd, 1919
A guidebook to the Isle of Wight with four colour illustrations by Alfred Heaton Cooper. This edition of the Guide “has been almost entirely rewritten, so as to form what is virtually a new work”.
An inscription to the title page and a loosely inserted note “A souvenir of a happy holiday in the I. of W.” indicates this book was a birthday gift from mother to son.
Hardback. Red cloth covers with title in black to spine and front board; colour onlay plate to front; publisher’s list to endpapers. pp [i-ii], [1], iii-iv, 124, 36 adverts, plus colour plates and maps/plans including a fold-out map. Size: 6.75 x 4.5 inches approx. (170mm x 113mm).
Covers a little rubbed and worn, somewhat sunned/faded. Cheap paper stock pages very tanned, especially to margins, but otherwise generally clean throughout. Inscription in ink to title page. Fold-out map foxed and a little split to folds.
Overall, showing wear commensurate with age and storage but otherwise remaining a nice copy – quite lovely, especially with the charming note and inscription.
