Modern Design in Embroidery

Rebecca Crompton
London: B. T. Batsford Ltd, 1st edition October 1936

Detailed study and a standard work by the innovative embroidery designer Rebecca Crompton (1895-1947).

Well illustrated throughout the text, plus a colour frontispiece and fifty-one plates (48 b/w and 3 colour). Dustwrapper art by Rebecca Crompton.

Hardback. Publisher’s cloth with title to spine and front board, in a price-clipped dustwrapper. pp viii, 72, including b/w illustrations plus b/w and colour plates; publisher’s catalogue pp [2], 30 at rear. Size: 10 x 6.25 inches approx. (252mm x 160mm)

Dustwrapper creased, rubbed and worn with tears and loss to spine ends and corner tips, a little grubby and marked; signs of old sellotape repairs to verso with staining and surface abrasion; sellotape now removed and a few strips of archival tape used to strengthen joints; flap folds stretched and loose; dustwrapper now housed in a paperbacked cellophane sleeve. Cloth a little shelfworn to extremities, especially lower edges of boards and corner tips; some shadowing of sellotape stains to upper and lower margins to front and rear boards but generally cloth very clean. Endpapers again have some light sellotape staining but nothing too bad; an ex-libris bookplate to front free endpaper; scattered foxing but pages generally very clean throughout; dusty and spotted to top edge of page-block.

At some point in this book’s life the dustwrapper has had a protective covering fixed on with sellotape leaving behind surface abrasion/loss to verso, and light staining to cloth and endpapers.

Overall, dustwrapper showing wear but otherwise remaining a nice, clean copy – presents very well indeed.
