Revised and expanded considerably after her death with many editions and printings. This copy with sixteen plates in colour and described in the preface as a “New Edition”; not dated but circa 1950 and published by Ward, Lock & Co. Limited.
From the preface: The destruction of the old illustrations in the “blitz” of 1940 has enabled the publishers to include an entirely new set of illustrations both in colour and black and white, and no expense has been spared to obtain the best possible results.
Hardback. Publisher’s red rexine style cloth spine over grey buckram boards; title to spine; advert endpapers. In a price-clipped dustwrapper. pp xvi, 1680, 16 (adverts), plus b/w and colour plates. Size: 8.5 x 5.75 inches approx. (216mm x 144mm).
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn, some chipping and small loss; short edge tears and creasing; three long tears to spine folds and now re-enforced with archival tape to verso; age-toned and a little dusty. Spine and boards with just light shelf wear to extremities, a little dusty but generally very clean; title dulled to spine. A previous owner’s gift inscription (usefully dated) in ink to verso of frontispiece; pages a touch dusty and marked in places, some occasional offsetting where a page marker has been, but generally clean throughout; several pages with a stain to fore-edge (please see image) leaving the paper brittle and with small loss to margin.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a nicely preserved copy – nice to find these thick editions complete with dustwrapper.
