Isabella Mary Beeton (1836-65), the author of Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management and originally published in 1861 by S. O. Beeton.
Revised and expanded considerably after her death with many editions and printings. This copy with thirty-two plates in colour; not dated but is a later printing of the 1923 New Edition published by Ward, Lock & Co. Limited.
Hardback. Publisher’s red rexine style cloth spine over light brown cloth boards; gilt title to spine; advert endpapers; edges of page-block red speckled. In a dustwrapper. pp xvi, 1680, 8 (adverts), plus b/w and colour plates. Size: 8.5 x 6 inches approx. (215mm x 150mm).
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn, short edge tears and creasing; small loss to corner tips and spine ends; grubby, foxed and marked, especially to spine; spine cockled; notably foxed and very tanned to spine verso. Cloth boards very clean, a touch bumped to corners; spine a little grubby and marked from years of accumulated dust trapped behind the dustwrapper, gilt bright. Sporadic foxing throughout, some dustiness, but generally pages clean; spotting to edges of page-block with some encroachment onto margins.
Overall, showing some wear but otherwise a nicely preserved copy – binding and pages tight, appears little read – and always nice to find a thick edition complete with dustwrapper.
