Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
as translated into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald
with illustrations by Adelaide Hanscom
New York: Dodge Publishing Company, Popular Edition (copyright 1914) circa 1920s
The Adelaide Hanscom/Blanche Cumming illustrated edition with twenty-eight black & white plates was originally published 1905 in New York by Dodge Publishing, the UK edition following in 1908 from George Harrap. In 1912 Dodge published an edition with the plates being coloured, the UK Harrap edition coming in 1914.
The “Popular Edition” with eight colour plates is dated by Potter* as 1927, however the contemporary inscription in this copy would suggest that is incorrect. The copyright date is more likely when this edition was first published.
This copy presented in a box and presumably for the Christmas gift market.
Card covers with dustwrapper, in box. 110pp plus 8 colour plates. Size: 6.25 x 5 inches approx. (160mm x 125mm).
Box worn, marked and grubby, split joints to lid. Dustwrapper attached to spine (presumably as intended), a little spotting to front panel; offsetting to endpapers; inscription to front endpaper – usefully dated (1924); age tanning to pages otherwise clean.
Overall, a quite lovely, attractive copy nicely protected in its somewhat worn box.
