Tales of Mystery and Imagination

by Edgar Allan Poe, illustrated by Harry Clarke
George G. Harrap & Co. Limited, [third] reprint January 1928

This edition of Poe’s Tales of Mystery was originally published 1919 by George G. Harrap and with reprints in October 1923 and February 1926, this copy being the January 1928 reprint. Superbly illustrated throughout in black & white by Dublin born Harry Clarke (1889-1931).

Hardback. Publisher’s dark grey-brown cloth with a grain effect to mimic morroco; gilt title and decoration to spine, blind rules to upper board; top edge of page-block stained pale orange-brown, uneven or rough cut to fore-edge and bottom edge. pp [1-4], 5-381, [382-383], [384] blank, including b/w illustrations within the text plus twenty-four b/w plates. Size: 10.75 x 8.5 inches approx. (275mm x 212mm).

Cloth a little rubbed and worn to extremities; boards a touch knocked to corners and lightly bumped to bottom edge of lower board. Endpapers a little dusty and marked, a gift inscription in ink and a bookplate to front free endpaper; age-toning to page edges but generally pages and plates very clean throughout.

Overall, light wear but otherwise a particularly well preserved copy – quite lovely.
