or, the Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments of an Englishman in an Attempt to Circulate the Scriptures in the Peninsula

by George Borrow, with the notes and glossary of Ulick Ralph Burke, M.A.
London: John Murray, reprint September 1907

Originally published 1842, this copy a 1907 reprint of the 1896 eighteenth (definitive) edition and presented in an extremely nice half-leather binding signed by booksellers Sotheran & GH 37 Piccadilly W to upper corner of front free endpaper verso.

Hardback. Red leather spine and corner pieces, over red cloth boards; gilt title and decoration to spine with raised bands; marbled endpapers; sewn-in ribbon pagemarker; top edge gilt to page-block. pp xxv, 12, 835, plus b/w frontispiece & two other b/w plates, with fold-out map to rear. Size: 8 x 5.5 inches approx. (199mm x 137mm).

Some dustiness in leather grain and the cloth a touch marked in places otherwise binding in nice condition. Preliminaries and last pages foxed and dusty; an owner’s inscription in ink to first blank; foxing to edges of page-block with some encroachment to page margins; occasional foxing and grubby mark to pages, the odd page nick to edge, but generally appear reasonably clean throughout; some scratching to top edge gilt.

Overall, contents showing age related wear however binding in nice, clean condition – quite lovely and very presentable.
