The Old Man and the Sea

by Ernest Hemingway, illustrated by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard
London: The Reprint Society, 1st illustrated edition 1953

This title first published in the US by Scribners in 1952, the UK edition being published the same year by Jonathan Cape. This illustrated edition published by The Reprint Society in 1953 unusually pre-dated Cape’s illustrated version of the same by two years (1955).

Hardback. Publisher’s turquoise blue cloth with red panel and silvered title to spine, silvered decoration to upper board; illustrated endpapers; top edge of page-block tinted red. In a dustwrapper with wrap-round illustration. pp [1-6], 7-117, [118-120], including b/w illustrations. Size: 8.75 x 6.25 inches approx. (221mm x 155mm).

Dustwrapper lightly rubbed and worn to extremities; a little foxed and spotted to flap folds; some dustiness and a touch sunned to spine. Cloth a little dusty/darkened to top edge of boards otherwise very clean and bright. Occasional foxing and dustiness to pages but generally very clean throughout; some fading to top edge red tinting.

Overall, light wear but otherwise a particularly nice, clean and fresh copy – exceptional indeed.
