The Old Man and the Sea
by Ernest Hemingway, illustrated by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard
London: The Reprint Society, fourth edition 1964
This title first published in the US by Scribners in 1952, the UK edition being published the same year by Jonathan Cape. The illustrated edition published by The Reprint Society in 1953 unusually pre-dated Cape’s illustrated version of the same by two years (1955). This copy being a fourth edition of the Reprint Society illustrated edition.
Note: The Reprint Society published the illustrated edition in 1953, 1961, 1962, and 1964. The first and second editions were with a turquoise blue cloth binding in the yellow dustwrapper, whilst the third and fourth editions were yellow cloth and blue dustwrappers. Rather strangely, the first edition is easier to find than the subsequent editions which are decidely uncommon in nice condition.
Hardback. Publisher’s yellow cloth with green panel and silvered title to spine, silvered decoration to upper board; illustrated endpapers. In a dustwrapper with illustrations to front and rear panels. pp [1-6], 7-117 [118-120], including b/w illustrations. Size: 8.75 x 6.25 inches approx. (222mm x 154mm).
Light handling wear and rubbing to dustwrapper, mainly to spine ends and corner tips; a light vertical crease to spine. Cloth clean and bright; bumped to corner tips of upper board. Pages very clean throughout.
Overall, light wear but otherwise a particularly nice, clean, and fresh copy — quite lovely.
