Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There
by Lewis Carroll, illustrations by John Tenniel
Macmillan Children’s Books, facsimile edition 1984
Never as popular as Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland but still worthy of being a children’s classic. Originally published in 1872 [1871], this copy being a facsimile reprint of the first edition.
In 1984 Macmillan published facsimile editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and each were available in both cloth and leather bindings, the latter now somewhat more uncommon to find.
Note: The cloth bound editions of each title were available singly with a slipcase (ISBNs 0333370058 & 0333370066) or as a two book set, again with a slipcase (ISBN 0333370090). The leather editions (ISBNs 0333370074 & 0333370082) are often found without a slipcase however do have a protective clear plastic wrapper. Interestingly, this copy is the first time I have seen a leather edition presented in a slipcase (and also without the protective wrapper). I am unaware of the leather editions being presented together in a slipcase.
Hardback. Publisher’s full red leather binding with title in gilt to spine and gilt decoration to boards; page-block with all edges gilt; head and tail bands; dark green endpapers. In a printed red and cream papered slipcase with title to spine and front panel, ISBNs to rear panel. pp. [12], 224, [3], [1] colophon, including b/w illustrations. Size: 7.25 x 5.25 inches approx. (188mm x 132mm).
A nice, clean copy of the leather edition – really quite lovely – with the accompanying slipcase.
