Originally published in the United States in the weekly abolitionist periodical The National Era over 1851-52 to popular acclaim and success, the book edition coming from the Boston publisher John P. Jewett and Company in 1852. In the United Kingdom the first authorised edition was published by London publishers Clarke and Company in 1852.
This copy published by Collins’ Clear-Type Press in the early twentieth century and with illustrations by R. R. Russell [Robert Ramsey Russell, fl. 1876-1912].
Hardback. Publisher’s green cloth with gilt and black title, and decorative coloured blocking illustration to spine and upper cover; illustrated endpapers; illustrated title page. 392pp plus colour title page and seven colour plates (including frontispiece). Size: 7.75 x 5.5 inches approx. (199mm x 139mm).
Cloth lightly rubbed to extremities; a little crushing to spine ends. Age-toning and light foxing to endpapers; prize label (dated 1912) pasted to first blank page; age-toning and light foxing to pages but generally very clean throughout; edges of page block tanned and dusty.
Overall, a particularly well preserved copy in lovely, clean condition – very presentable indeed..
