Alice in Wonderland
by Lewis Carroll, illustrated by A. L. Bowley
London, Paris, New York: Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, [No Date] circa 1930
A volume in Tuck’s Golden Treasury Library series. Published in the 1920s/30s, titles originally came with a dustwrapper and bound in red, green or blue cloth. Printings are difficult to date accurately without a helpful contemporary ownership inscription.
Note: The Golden Treasury edition of Alice with illustrations by A. L. Bowley was first published in 1927*.
There is a pencilled annotation to upper corner of rear free endpaper which is likely a contemporary bookseller’s stock code: x/u 3/6 830. New price was 3 shillings and sixpence, and although not definitive it’s reasonable to assume the book was taken into stock August 1930.
Hardback. Publisher’s blue cloth with inlay label/plate to upper board; gilt title to spine. pp 222, [2] publisher’s catalogue, including b/w illustrations plus six colour plates. 7.75 x 5.25 inches approx. (196mm x 134mm).
Cloth lightly worn and rubbed to extremities, a touch grubby and marked; onlay plate to upper cover a little rubbed and worn; spine ends a little crushed. Endpapers a little grubby and foxed, some staining to rear free endpaper; scattered foxing and grubbiness throughout, heavier to preliminaries and last few pages, but generally pages are reasonably clean; spotting/foxing to edges of page-block with some encroachment onto page margins, dusty to top edge.
Overall, showing wear commensurate with age and storage but otherwise remaining a reasonably nice copy – attractive.
