The children’s classic written by Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) was originally published in 1866 [1865], this copy a 1953 printing.
An extremely nice half-leather binding with attractively themed decoration in gilt to spine and boards. Bound by Zaehnsdorf, London, England – stamped to verso of front free endpaper at lower edge.
Personalised to lower corner of front board (initials and date), with a gift inscription on first blank page by a loving aunt to a Penelope Jane on her fourth birthday.
Hardback. Red half-leather over red cloth boards; gilt title and decoration to spine, raised bands; gilt decoration to front and rear boards; head and tail bands; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt to page-block. pp [4] blanks, half-title, frontispiece, title, [6], 177, [1], colophon, [4] blanks, including b/w illustrations. Size: 7.25 x 5 inches approx. (185mm x 125mm).
Light wear and rubbing to binding, occasional light mark or scuff. Inscription in ink to first blank; occasional foxing or mark but pages generally clean throughout; edges of page-block tanned and a little spotted, dusty.
Overall, light wear but otherwise a nice, clean copy – a beautiful binding.
