Folio Society first published The Hobbit in 1976 using publishers George Allen and Unwin’s 1976 ‘De-luxe’ edition that utilised Tolkien’s own illustrations [ref. 408.5 Folio 75]. In 1979 Folio published a new edition, this copy, with illustrations by Eric Fraser.
Hardback. Publisher’s red leather spine with gilt title and design, over red cloth with gilt design to front board; map endpapers; top edge of page-block stained red. In a grey papered slipcase. pp 245, [246] colophon, [2] blank, including b/w illustrations. Size: 9 x 6 inches approx. (228mm x 148mm).
Slipcase showing light shelf wear; some splitting to joints but holding together well; discolouration/sunning, especially to opening and top; small bump to lower rear corner. Leather spine and cloth boards clean and bright; a light knock to lower corner of rear board (mirroring slipcase bump). Pages clean throughout.
Overall, a lovely, clean copy – appears unread – in a shelf worn slipcase.
